6 Effective Birth Control Techniques
There are several common methods of birth control, many of which do not even require a doctor visit or prescription. Each method works in a different way. While some methods prevent the sperm from getting to an egg, there are others that inhibit the female body from releasing eggs. But every contraceptive technique has the same goal — to prevent unwanted pregnancy. Here are some of the best contraceptive methods.
Male condom
This is one of the most commonly used methods of birth control. A male condom prevents unwanted pregnancy by stopping the sperms from entering into the vagina. It is worn by men over their penis at the time of intercourse. Made from latex or polyurethane, these condoms can be easily purchased from drugstores or supermarkets. They also help to prevent the transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Female condom
The female condom comprises of two flexible rings made from polyurethane. One ring easily fixes behind the pubic cone to keep the condom in place whereas the other stays outside the vagina. Though it can be said that this method is less effective than a male condom, it helps to prevent 79 percent of the pregnancies. It can also be used along with a physical barrier.
Cervical cap
One of the common methods of birth control, a cervical cap is a latex rubber device that fits over the cervix and prevents the sperms from entering into the uterus. Make sure to fill one-third of the cap with spermicide before inserting to keep it in place.
Intrauterine device (IUD)
This is a T-shaped device that is implanted by a gynecologist in the uterus. It can stay in place as long as the pregnancy is not desired. There are two types of IUD — copper IUD and hormonal IUD. The former acts as a spermicide and can last up to 10 years, whereas the latter contains progestin and prevents the sperm from reaching the egg.
Contraceptive pill
This is another one of the common methods of birth control. A contraceptive pill contains two hormones — progestin and estrogen. These hormones do not allow the release of the egg or stop the eggs from ovulating.
Vaginal ring
This is a ring made of flexible material. It slowly releases a small quantity of estrogen and progestin over a period of three weeks. It helps to prevent ovulation from occurring and also thickens the cervical mucus so that the sperm cannot travel. One can insert a vaginal ring for three weeks and then remove it for one week.
So, these are some of the most common methods of birth control. They can help one eliminate the chances of pregnancy. However, it is important to understand that these methods are not 100 percent effective. One can also combine two methods as an additional safety measure.
